ANCC Pain certification

April 26th, 2012

Dear PRNs,

I have been asked by a few prns about the pain certification throught the ANCC. Below you will find the criteria to sit for this exam. I cut and pasted this from the ANCC site. If you are interested, please go to ANCC site and explore the pain management test criteria, etc.

I took this exam in 2005 and I do have the Core Curriculm for Pain Management Nursing book, which was, at least at that time a recommended resource. If any one is interested in borrowing my book to study, you are welcome to do so.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance with this.

Update on aromatherapy

March 28th, 2012

I stand corrected………checked with Vickie G. today and you are go ahead with what you all are doing with aromatherapy as long as we are working toward policy with guidelines for the future. So aromatherapy away!! Julia Ryder is working on policy with her manager and when they have draft policy perhaps some of you from other departments can review to add/make changes to include your department/area. The bottomline is we want to have some basic guidelines and some consistency with products, etc.

Hope this makes sense. Deanna

PRN meeting follow-up

March 27th, 2012

Dear PRNs,

I hope you enjoyed the last prn meeting; I have had feedback from many of you, but I would enjoying from each of you. It was great to see you all and to hear about the wonderful projects and work that you all are doing; good job!!

These meetings, and this group is yours, so please let me and Rye know what is meaningful, what isn’t, etc.

In that regard, we would really like to hear what education you would like to receive at next meeting June 13, 2012. Please get your suggestions to us asap as we will be starting planning soon.

I am also wondering if a rough draft aromatherapy policy got to P & T committee today? I will check with that committee, but curious if any of you were able to work on getting that accomplished. Remember no more aromatherapy until that policy is reviewed. Thanks for working on this as it seems aromatherapy is a powerful pain treatment and something we want to make available to pain patients.

We want to thank you all for your ongoing and dedication to pain care. Please contact me or Rye with any questions/concerns/ideas.

Thanks,

Deanna and Rye

PRN education/meeting November 3, 2011

August 31st, 2011

I recently sent out an email to all PRNs about upcoming meeting/education and thought I would follow with a post here too.

There will be a PRN training for new PRN nurses for 1.5 days November 2 & 3rd, 2011. On the afternoon of the 3rd all PRNs (new and “old”) will meet from approximately 1300-1700. The agenda has not been finalized, but will include 1 or 2 educational pieces and an opportunity for current PRNs to share projects/thoughts with new PRNs.

Wanted to make sure you got this information early so that you can plan your schedules appropriately; see you then!! As we get closer to this training date, I would appreciate knowing how many of you will be able to attend. Thanks.

And in the meantime please contact me if you have any questions or need my assistance in any way. I really appreciate hearing from you all on what you are working on in  the area of pain.

Thanks again,

Additional info re: MPI conference

August 24th, 2011

The Subject line: Register Today: 5th Annual Montana Pain Initiative Conference, Oct 21-2, Bozeman, MT

The message:

Register Today for the 5th Annual Montana Pain Initiative Conference “Front Line Pain Management: Neuroplastic Transformation, Interdisciplinary Care, Safe Prescribing” that will be held at the GranTree Inn, October 21-22, in Bozeman, MT. Continuing Education Credits (12.5) have been approved. The early bird fee for the 2-day conference is $165 (registration must be received by October 1).

The 2011 event will provide practitioners with methods for integrating neuroplasticity, manual therapy, interdisciplinary approaches and safe prescribing into clinical settings. These approaches will not only change practice, but will help people in pain dramatically improve their own ability to manage their lives. A six-module workbook with resources and patient handouts is included in the conference fee. Montana’s Prescription Drug Registry, was signed into law after the 2011 Legislative session. How this tool can assist providers with safe opioid prescribing will be discussed.

Registration is now available at www.mtpain.org . Click “Register for the Pain Initiative Conference”. You will then select your “participant type” based on whether you need CMEs or CEUs or do not need continuing education credit.
